A Godfrey ordinance addressing transient merchants and itinerant vendors may soon be beefed up. Concerns have recently been brought to the village about people going door to door in neighborhoods handing out sales materials without getting permits. Village Clerk Pam Whisler says the existing ordinance is vague enough that the solicitors are skirting the intent of the law.

Concerns about safety are driving this request for stronger wording with the nationwide increase of scammers and other crooks sometimes going door to door to target potential victims. In 2011 the village board passed an ordinance establishing fees for door to door salesmen. The village attorney will take a look at how to address this new concern. Whisler asks anyone who sees someone suspicious in their neighborhood to call her office at 466-3381.
