Godfrey Firefighters responded to a call last night at a home on Brecht Lane, when smoke started pouring from an upstairs window. First responders learned that a mentally challenged man was unaccounted for. Responders learned that Mark Stover, a man described as child-like, was missing and could have been inside the burning home. Firefighters searched the house thoroughly, even using heat detection equipment.
After determining that Stover was not in the house, responders started combing the area for the man. Nearly five hours after first responders arrived at the scene, a firefighter spotted Stover in a forested area near the home. Godfrey Fire Captain Tom Wills said that at least 25 volunteers joined in the search, some bringing four wheelers and even a camera equipped drone. Captain Wills said that Stover was shaken up, but had no injuries. The home sustained extensive damage and it is still unknown what started the fire.
