The Godfrey Village Board is considering an amendment to the village's hotel/motel tax ordinance. Village Attorney Tom Long presented a measure at the request of Mayor Mike McCormick at the village board meeting last week.

The changes proposed by Long would allow the village limit the number of permanent residents and take legal action against those who violate it.

Under the proposed measure, the owners of the motel's would be required to report the number of permanent residents to the Mayor. If more than 5 percent of the population of their business were permanent residents, or the proprietors failed to submit their report they could face an injunction and fine of up to $500. The new ordinance would also make it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be a permanent resident.

McCormick has given village trustees some time to consider the issues and asked that they be ready to take action on the proposed measure at the next Village Board Meeting on July 2nd.
