The Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois have received a grant of $25,000 from the Monsanto Fund to support Science Technology Engineering and Math or STEM, Robotics leadership in Jersey, Macoupin, Madison and St. Clair Counties. The grant will help fund GSSI's robotics season which starts this fall with FIRST LEGO League. The FIRST LEGO League participants build and program a robot using LEGO components. The highest scoring teams at regional tournaments proceed to a global tournament.


Emily Stanley, the STEM program manager for GSSI told the Big Z how important the robotics program is for the girl scouts.

The grant money will also be used to support the First Tech Challenge Team, that belongs to a league that challenges middle and high school students to build an program an autonomous robot.        In 2016, GSSI's First Tech Challenge Team qualified for both the Missouri and Illinois State Championships and won numerous awards.
