Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons will discuss the dangers of heroin with students this morning at Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto. He will be joined by Chief Investigator Kelly Rogers with the Madison County Coroner’s Office and Troy Police Officer Chris Coyne who has served as a D.A.R.E. officer for over 18 years.

Gibbons recently told the Big Z, the fight against heroin abuse starts with having discussions with young people and warning them of the dangers, but also reminding them there is hope for those who are currently struggling:

There were 22 confirmed heroin overdose deaths in 2013. Gibbons, Coroner Steve Nonn and other law enforcement officials in the region continue to be outspoken in their effort to raise awareness about the risk and threat of heroin to Metro-East communities and have spoken at multiple school assemblies as part of that effort.  Earlier this month, Gibbons, Rogers and Coyne spoke to students in all grades at Collinsville High School.
