The Illinois Department of Revenue closed all three Sonic locations in the River Bend last week, and the future of the drive-in fast food restaurants remains uncertain. The owner, Robert Bacon, has been unavailable for comment regarding allegations that he mismanaged the business and failed to pay some employees in a timely manner.
That's not the only reason his businesses were shut down last week in Godfrey, East Alton and Jerseyville, however. The state locked the doors last Thursday for apparently failing to report sales taxes and employee income tax withholdings. The IDR is also reportedly looking into other financial matters regarding Bacon Sonic LLC of East Alton, Godfrey and Jerseyville regarding unpaid child support. Several former employees say local vendors were apparently on the outs with Bacon and would not supply his restaurant due to unpaid bills, and the Godfrey Fire Department had apparently ordered the Godfrey location closed following two recent grill fires, but the store remained open.
