A fuel spill near Granite City Thursday has closed a portion of the Mississippi River to traffic.  The incident happened when a vessel was passing through Lock and Dam 27, and 20-thousand gallons of fuel was lost from a tank that was damaged while passing through the lock.  The cause of the damage is under investigation.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the spill and says it was contained to the area around the Lock and Dam, but the river is closed until further notice and the spill is cleaned up.
