A Monday night accident between an ambulance from the Alhambra / Hamel Ambulance Service and a tractor-trailer sent four people to the hospital with incapacitating injuries. Police say the ambulance and the semi were southbound on Interstate 55 when the ambulance made a sudden move to exit the highway. At that point the tractor-trailer hit the ambulance, causing it to overturn.
This all happened just before 8:00pm at the Interstate 55 Southbound Rest Area at milepost 28. According to the report from the Illinois State Police, the ambulance was responding to a medical emergency at the rest area at milepost 28. The ambulance is said to have made a sudden turn to the right, as if to go up the ramp that leads to the rest area the wrong way. At that point, the semi caught the ambulance in the right-rear corner, causing it to overturn. Both drivers and both passengers were injured and taken to Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Injured in the ambulance are 31-year-old Theodore W. Berg of Staunton and 61-year-old Michele M. Loguue of Hamel. Those injured in the tractor-trailer are 69-year-old Daniel D. Eddinger of Lisbon, Ohio, and 52-year-old Rayburn Conway of Sandusky, Ohio. No charges have been issued.
