An Alton Police officer who was fired nearly four years ago is back on patrol in the City. Jennifer Doty was dismissed from the Alton Police Department after pleading guilty to DUI following her arrest in Foster Township in November 2009. Illinois Police Benevolent and Protective Association Unit 14 filed a grievance on her behalf and an arbitrator ruled that Doty must be rehired as a jailer in September 2010. She was hired as a jailer in September 2012 at which time the PBPA filed an appeal alleging the arbitrator had exceeded his power and asked that Doty be returned to a police officer position.
On October 18, Doty was officially appointed as an officer with the status of new hire, as stipulated by a settlement reached with the City on October 7th. In the settlement, Doty also agreed to waive her right to back pay, to take courses to become a fully credited officer, dismissed any appeals or grievances against the city and agreed not to sue the city for matters related to employment or termination.
