A former Wood River city employee will spend much of the next three years in prison for stealing from the city. 42-year-old Leslie Dona was the city's assistant finance director of 17 years before an incident last year in which she went missing for a few days. She apparently skipped town right before an annual audit. Yesterday, she entered a guilty plea to Theft by Deception in Madison County Court.
Dona stole $143,000 over the course of about four years by altering software, fund and support manipulation, and by destroying records. She will have to repay that money as part of the plea. The Madison County State's Attorney's Office secured Dona's IMRF pension, which is believed to be a first. That, along with other assets added up to about $55,000. The city received $50,000 from an insurance policy that covered the theft. Dona has been in jail since her arrest in September and will receive credit for time served on her three-year sentence.
