A former bank official is facing federal charges following an investigation into an alleged armed robbery in December. The United States Attorney of Southern Illinois has brought charges against 39-year-old Matthew S. Liebheit of the 100 block of Magnolia Drive in Moro. He is charged with two counts of Theft, Embezzlement, or Misapplication by a Bank Officer or Employee, and one count of False Bank Entries.
Investigators say Liebheit's claim that a masked gunman forced him into the Bethalto Liberty Bank before opening December 13 and taking more than $200,000 from the vault is not true. The masked person allegedly used Liebheit’s truck, and a band of ten-dollar bills was found when they searched his truck. He also allegedly altered withdrawal documents from a customer’s account to reflect a larger than intended withdrawal. The day before the purported robbery, Leibheit allegedly altered that customer’s account to show a substantial deposit. If convicted, Liebheit could spend up to 30 years in prison.
