You can add the mental health professionals to the list of those with work to do in advance of the concealed-carry law going into practice in Illinois. Department of Human Services spokesman Tom Green says they need to make sure potentially dangerous people aren't allowed to get a Firearm Owner's ID Card – let alone a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

“The FOID reporting system collects information on persons in Illinois that have been adjudicated mentally disabled, mentally ill, are in a psychiatric unit, or have been declared a clear and present danger to themselves or others,” says Green. “The information is supplied to the Illinois State Police, who do a cross-match.” Green says the scope of the state's reporting system is broadened in terms of who must report, and what must be reported.
