With the flu in Illinois categorized as widespread, the Illinois Department of Corrections has seen few flu cases among prison inmates and employees. Stacey Solano, spokeswoman for the department, says “We have seen a few inmates with flu-like symptoms but we have not experienced any major outbreaks.”
With Illinois having a reported 27 deaths related to the flu, Solano says, “Each facility does have an official flu plan, and this plan would detail the proper protocols that need to be followed if the facility were to experience an outbreak.”

To keep the inmates and employees from contracting the virus, Solano encourages all visitors with flu symptoms to stay home and reschedule their visit.
