A rare winter flood event has impacted several downtown Alton businesses. Argosy Casino and the Alton Marina both closed on Monday and a handful of businesses along West Third Street and the foot of State Street also prepared for the high water.
The Mississippi River is expected to crest at its second highest level in recorded history on Thursday, which means water around the Ardent Mills flourmill and water on Broadway at State and Broadway and Belle Streets by the end of the week. Several businesses began moving out items on Sunday and Monday, while others are pumping water out of already empty basements. Sandbagging efforts continue today.
One event has been cancelled as a result of the flooding. The Audubon-Alton Eagle Fest on Saturday January 2 has been postponed. The Eagle Meet and Greets at the Alton CVB office, along with Eagle Watching Shuttle Tours will resume on January 9.
