Flooding on the Mississippi River this week likely will not mean water in some of the lower areas of downtown Alton. The intersection of Broadway and State Streets, the basements of some downtown businesses and Riverfront Park are usually the first to be impacted, but Alton’s Public Works Director says the current forecast falls short of hitting the mark where flood-fighting plans would be put into action.

The crest is predicted to have the Mississippi River reach 25.6 feet. At 31.5 feet, basements of the commercial buildings downtown will begin to take water, and water will begin to seep into Riverfront Park at 32.9 feet.
