Instead of heading for the border and bringing back fireworks – the kind which explode or fly or both and are illegal in Illinois – maybe Illinois can simply legalize them so they can be sold here, benefiting Illinois’ tax coffers. The fire safety community has a message for lawmakers who may be tempted: You couldn’t. You shouldn’t.

“Any move to relax laws … for the purpose of creating a new tax source is putting a cheap price tag on the safety of our citizens,” said Joe Roccaslava at a news conference in the Capitol. Roccaslava is fire safety coordinator and a deputy division chief at the Chicago Fire Department.
The fireworks – even supposedly less harmful ones, such as sparklers, legal in much of Illinois – can cause painful burns which require painful treatment and recovery. The pain, say fire chiefs, a doctor, and a recovering victim said, can also be psychological.
