Training, teamwork, and the grace of God are the reasons the emcee of Tuesday’s Illinois firefighters’ memorial ceremony gave for 2014 being a year free of on-the-job fatalities, the first such year since 2002. Actually, Frankfort fire chief Jim Grady mentioned training three times.“We have very good gear, very good equipment – but it’s still a very dangerous job, and things change in a heartbeat,” Grady said.

Gov. Bruce Rauner called firefighters “true patriots … the strongest Americans” in his remarks.  The brief ceremony on the Capitol grounds was a prelude to a march to the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
