Three of the five unions representingAltoncity employees have now approved new contracts. Members of the Firefighters union have agreed to a deal that mirrors the contract approved by the Teamsters in March. Personnel Director David Miles compares this contract to the ones ratified by the Teamsters' and AFSCME earlier this year.
One issue that could have killed the deal was an effort by Alderman Gary Fleming to remove wording that relaxed the residency requirement. Employees with 20-years of continuous service can move out of city limits, as long as the primary residence was within a 15 mile radius of theAltonLawEnforcementCenter, and inIllinois. Had the amendment passed, it would have vided the contract that the firefighters had already voted on. The city is still working on hammering out a contract with the two police unions.
