The Alton Fire Department is announcing a successful result to a fundraising campaign in order to purchase a new piece of lifesaving equipment. A large donation from OSF St. Anthony's Health Center has combined with a number of other public and private donations to allow the purchase of a Lucas 2 CPR device.
Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells The Big Z this compression device straps across the person's chest and a plunger replaces the rescuer's hands doing compressions to circulate the blood through the body.

The total cost of a Lucas 2 is $17,500. Sebold hopes to raise enough money for a second unit, and believes another grant may come through in the next couple of months to cover all but $4,000 of that cost.
