The Alton Fire Department is applying for a grant that could help reduce slip and fall accidents among the elderly.  Earlier this week, the city council gave Fire Chief Bernie Sebold (pictured) permission to apply for the Remembering When Fire and Fall Prevention Program grant.  He hopes to get word on whether the city wins the $10,000 in July.

Sebold says the city has an aging population and five age-restricted residential facilities in town - Glenhaven Gardens, Skyline Towers, Humboldt Apartments, Marian Heights, and St. Clare's Hospital.  If the grant is approved:

He says the applications were due by January 18, so the council had to suspend the rules to approve the move.   The program is administered by the National Fire Protection Association.
