A fire damaged a home in the 2800 block of Residence in Alton on Tuesday.  Alton fire crews responded to the blaze just after 1:30pm yesterday when a renter returned to the home and called 9-1-1.  No one was home when the fire broke out.

Fire crews reported flames coming from the rear of the home when they arrived on the scene and Mutual Aid was requested from the East Alton Fire Department.  Alton fire officials believe the fire started in the bathroom and they were able to contain it there.  The residents told authorities that a candle had been burning in the bathroom earlier in the day but was put out before they left.  Someone also may have been smoking in the bathroom prior to the fire.  Fire officials say the home can be repaired but an exact cause of the blaze is undetermined.
