An Alton family escaped a house fire Wednesday, but are trying to regroup just before school starts.  The fire broke out in the rear of their residence at the corner of Monument and East 4th Street yesterday afternoon.  Several teens inside the home were able to escape just minutes after their mother left the home not seeing the flames in the back.

The woman, Tammy Franklin, told authorities she drove away from the front of the home and did not see the smoke or flames.  She returned just minutes later after receiving a call from one of her children about the fire.  Her teenage children, ages 19,17,16 and 13, were not injured, but the family lost many of their belonging including back to school supplies and some new clothing.   Alton fire officials say the fire appears to have started in the rear of the structure and thanks to quick action was mostly contained to the back addition of the home.  The residence is split into two apartments, with the other side unoccupied.
