Quick work by several local fire departments helped avert a larger disaster early Tuesday morning in Bethalto. Fire crews were called out to a blaze just after midnight yesterday in the 500 block of North Prairie that required the assistance of several other area departments.
When Bethalto Fire arrived on the scene, they found two garages on fire and several other structures that were threatened including several homes. Inside one garage was a propane tank and ammunition. Firefighters from East Alton, Rosewood Heights, Holiday Shores and Fosterburg responded to the mutual aid call and the blaze was brought under control within an hour and there were no injuries. The two garages were considered total losses, and there was minimal damage to the outside of three homes. The Illinois State Fire Marshals Office is investigating the cause.
