A fire in East Alton late Saturday night burned one side of a duplex in the 400 block of Whitelaw Avenue.  Several departments responded to the scene where neighbors helped a 42-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair escape the blaze.

The woman was actually on the front porch of her home when she noticed the flames around 10:15pm Saturday.  Her next-door neighbors came outside and tried to help put out the fire, but when the flames became too intense, assisted the woman to safety and called 9-1-1.  That side of the duplex was destroyed, but the other side occupied by the neighbors only sustained smoke damage.   Fire crews from Alton, Wood River, Roxana, Hartford and Rosewood Heights assisted on the call.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
