After 156 years of ministry to the community, Alton's Twelfth Street Presbyterian Church announced in March that it would cease operations at the end of the year. Church leaders cite an aging membership, decreasing income, and the cost of maintenance and care for the decision to close.

Pastor David Olson says the membership has decided to wrap things up on their own terms, rather than going out with a whimper, and will have one last service this Sunday, Christmas Day.

Olson comments

Olson says the 9 months notice has helped members to find a new place to worship, as the Presbyterian faith does not place its members when a church closes.
