Two FBI agents visited Madison County government offices on Tuesday. The agents delivered subpoenas to two employees of the Treasurer's Office, and also visited with Madison County Clerk Mark Von Nida for about an hour. He did not comment on the visit, and County Treasurer Kurt Prenzler said he was not told the reason for the visit, but assumed it had to do with a possible investigation into former treasurer Fred Bathon.
Published reports indicate a federal grand jury could be looking into actions within the treasurer's office during Bathon's term in connection with tax sales. The issue has been in and out of the news since Bathon resigned from office in December 2009 and also through his successor Frank Miles, both Democrats, and even under Republican Prenzler. Prenzler has publicly butted heads with many top Democratic office holders for decisions made during his time in office, but Prenzler has many times blamed past treasurer's office administrations saying he was trying to fix long standing problems.
