The U.S Justice Department has opened a broad investigation into allegations of unlawful police procedures in Ferguson, Missouri. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that the probe is in addition to a federal civil rights investigation into the police shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown.
The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division will look into years of data to determine whether the department engaged in a pattern of discriminatory policing and the use of excessive force. The majority of Ferguson residents are black, and the city's police department is predominantly white.
