Police have brought charges in a fatal shooting of a man on a float trip on the upper Meramec River over the weekend. The 48-year-old man was floating on the river between Cuba and Steelville when an argument began with a property owner. Police say the fight ended with 59-year-old James Robert Crocker allegedly shooting the floater, killing Paul Franklin Dart of Robertsville.
Crocker has been taken into custody by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and charged with second degree murder. The incident took place about 2pm Saturday, and was apparently a dispute over property rights as the floaters had stopped along the river bank when confronted by Crocker.
