A memorial service was held Tuesday, honoring the lives of two Alton Firefighters who were killed while fighting a fire 20 years ago today.  29 year old probationary firefighter Tim Lewis and 38 year old Captain Gary Porter were inside a structure in the 1400 block of Highland Avenue on October 24, 1992 when a wall collapsed on them.  The fire was later determined to have been set on purpose and two men were convicted in the crime.

The ceremony was held inside the Twichell Memorial Fire Station Tuesday morning, and included many members of both the Lewis and Porter families, along with current and past firefighters and police officers, city officials, and friends.  Three bells rang three times in honor of the lost men, who co-workers said died doing what they loved.
