A major expansion is planned for the Gateway Commerce Center along Illinois 255 in Madison County. The large distribution and warehouse center resides within Edwardsville, Pontoon Beach, and unincorporated Madison County, and the expansion of an enterprise zone could lead to an $80 million expansion that could be one of a kind in the United States.
Initial approval came at a public hearing on the expansion yesterday, and the proposal cleared the Madison County Board Grants Committee on Monday. Approval from elected leaders in both Edwardsville and Pontoon Beach is also required and expected in the coming weeks. The project would include the construction of a 2.4 million square foot warehouse, which owners call the largest of its kind in the country. The project is expected to create 800 warehouse jobs, and 400 construction jobs. Current businesses with distribution centers at Gateway include Hershey, Dial, Save-a-Lot, Proctor and Gamble, and Unilever. In addition to the new warehouse, a new Fairfield Inn and Suites hotel would be constructed on seven acres in Pontoon Beach.
