If you live in the Milton area of Alton, you may notice the rumble from a new mining effort nearby. Bluff City Minerals is seeking permission to mine under a storm water retention area on the southwestern corner of their property, which is along Homer Adams Parkway. The Alton City Council will consider that request at tonight’s meeting.
The Committee of the Whole approved the resolution Monday night 5-2, with Aldermen Gary Fleming and David Boulds casting the votes in opposition. As part of the agreement, Bluff City Minerals retains the right to place an airshaft on the north side of Illinois Route 140, similar to the one at Gordon Moore Park near the baseball diamonds. In exchange, the city will get $32,000 in rock to be used in the Public Works Department. Repeated attempts to contact someone at the quarry for comment have been unsuccessful. Tonight Alton City Council meeting begins at 7:30 at Alton City Hall.
