Alton's 175th anniversary events continue, and eight students of local public and private schools were recently honored for their atristic and writing skills. The city teamed with the Hayner public Library District to sponsor a poster and essay contest. The winners received Kindle electronic readers this week at the Alton City Council meeting.
Winners were Abby Day, Evan Everitt, Abbie Hernandez, and Alexandria Jun, honored for their posters, and Madison Bemis, Isabelle Droste, Rachel Staten and Katie Williams in the essay category,according to Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst.
The city also unveiled its commemorative license plate. They are available for $25 on a first-come first-serve basis. The Secretary of State's office approved the plates recently, and they will be legal to display in place of your normal license plate between May 23 and July 21.
