Alton continues to show trends as a safer place to live year after year, as overall crime has shown a 6% drop for 2014. The police chief credits much of this to building relationships in the community, encouraging officers to get out of their cars and meeting business owners and residents in the city.
Alton had two murders in 2014, compared to one in 2013. But he says in each case the alleged offenders were arrested. Police Chief Jason Simmons tells The Big Z they are getting more cooperation from most of the community.
