The American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and platelet donations.  Nearly 650 fewer Red Cross blood drives are scheduled this week than an average week due to Independence Day vacations. But, the Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites to allow for more donations and help offset the shortfall.

American Red Cross Joe Zydlo tells The Big Z Blood donations have fallen short of hospital needs for the past few months, resulting in about 39,000 fewer donations than what’s needed, as well as a significant draw down of the overall Red Cross blood supply.
