A pair of Municipal Officers Electoral Board hearings scheduled for last night in Bethalto have been moved to Monday morning after board members decided they needed more time to familiarize themselves with the rules.
Last night, the board voted to adopt the rules for the hearings and issued each candidate in the upcoming mayoral race a copy of the rules before announcing plans to reconvene for the two hearings beginning at 7 a.m. Monday morning.
The two hearings will address a challenge to the petitions filed by two candidates running for Mayor in April. Howard "Whitey" Lewis,a candidate for Mayor of Bethalto, is challenging the petitions submitted by both Clyde W. Jones and Alan Winslow. Last night, Lewis questioned the timing of the board’s decision.
Lewis and the other candidates declined to comment on the particulars of each challenge until they are heard on Monday. The first hearing will take place inside the Bethalto City Council Chambers at 7 a.m. on Monday morning. The second hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m.
