Eight St. Louis area residents, including two from Alton, face federal charges in connection to a tax refund scam.  Prosecutors allege that 38-year-old Angenita M. Smith and 36-year-old Tammy M. Smith, both of Alton, prepared fraudulent tax forms and gave them to family and friends, who would then use them to obtain tax refund money that wasn't theirs.

Argenita and Tammy Smith also allegedly used some of the false W-2 forms to get money for themselves.  Eight people have been charged with filing false tax returns, while the Smiths face numerous additional charges including lying to federal agents.
