The Edwardsville School Board has approved a new two year contract with its teachers. The pact includes a pay freeze in the first year, then a 2-percent step pay increase in the second year. The contract also allows for an increase in class sizes at all grade levels with up to 26 students for kindergarten, and up to 34 students per class in high school.
The two sides had been at odds over class size, and the desire of the district to hold the line on salaries, claiming the state of the economy and the financial condition of the state. Other parts of the contract included the continued payment of 100-percent of teachers health insurance and elimination of one of two preparation periods for middle school teachers. Members of the Edwardsville Education Association approved the contract with about 85-percent in favor, last Thursday.
