Bruce Rauner won because Pat Quinn lost. That’s how former Gov. Jim Edgar sums up Election Day. “I said, the voters really will decide on you in the next six months,” Edgar says he told the governor-elect. “When you run against an incumbent, usually the incumbent’s the issue. I think people like Quinn, but they just didn’t think he was, maybe, up to the job.”

As far as the incoming leader’s ideology is concerned, “I kind of wanted to see another moderate Republican become governor,” Edgar says. “I just never realized, when this started out, I was going to get one. Because, you know, (then-Sen.) Kirk (Dillard, Edgar’s primary choice) kind of went right on me, and I was about ready to strangle him, and then Rauner … but I think it’s going to be fine.”
