The Alton Bell Community Credit Union is hosting a combination e-cycling and shred day. This is an event that will take basically anything with a plug or a battery and keep it out of the landfill. Some of the parts will make it into other appliances, while the pieces that cannot be recycled will be disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way.
More electronic items are finding their way to these e-cycling events since a new law in Illinois went into effect last year to keep the items out of landfills. Experts say the heavy metals in various electronics can leach into the groundwater supply over time, poisoning our source of drinking water. As for the shred day portion of the day, you can bring anything with personal information that needs to be kept away from potential identity thieves to the event, and they will be disposed of as well after shredding. The event at the credit union runs from 9am-1pm. The Alton Bell Community Credit Union is located at the corner of Broadway and Market Street in Alton.
