Illinois residents who rely on the EBT food stamp system can once again access their benefits. A nationwide glitch has now been fixed. Xerox Corporation apparently caused the outage, which began Saturday morning. The company said a routine check is to blame for the system crash, which caused the EBT, or Electronic Benefits Transfer, cards in 17 states to stop working including Illinois.
The problem was discovered Saturday morning when problems began being reported in several states and even backup phone numbers for the individual state systems were not working. Xerox officials blame a routine test of backup systems on Saturday morning for the outage. Many businesses that accept the cards placed signs on their doors on Saturday afternoon warning customers of the problem.
