The Eastgate Plaza shopping center is deteriorating, but East Alton's mayor hopes a buyer will step forward to purchase the property and rehab it. Joe Silkwood says the current owners - a California company - have recently put a price tag of $1.5-million on the property.

A couple of years ago East Alton village trustees voted to condemn portions of the shopping center. Two signs and a pair of wood frame additions at the rear of the building were demolished as a result. Julia’s Banquet Center, Dollar General and Eastgate Cinema are the only remaining businesses at the center.
