Much to the Mayor's chagrin, East St. Louis leaders have opted to slash late nightclub hours.  Mayor Alvin Parks attempt to veto the 3-2 vote was overturned at last night's council meeting.   A date has not been determined to begin closing clubs at 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.  The city has been urged by federal authorities to cut hours to help curb violence.

A number of people have been shot and injured, in some cases killed, at or near nightclubs in East St. Louis...some that were open until sunrise.  U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois Steven Wigginton and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, an East St. Louis native, had called on the mayor to shorten the hours, but he had balked at the suggestion saying it would hurt business.
