The Village of East Alton's Fire Department is beginning the process to replace its pumper truck. The current pumper, a 1997 Pierce Saber, is 20 years old. East Alton Fire Chief Rodney Palmer said 20 years is generally a full life of any fire apparatus. Currently the fire department has a two-vehicle response system, a pumper truck and a rescue truck. The new pumper would condense the two vehicles in to one.
Chief Palmer told the Big Z that condensing down to one truck will be safer and cheaper.

A new fire truck costs around $500,000. The village is looking into ways of funding the purchase, including a zero-interest loan from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshall and a low interest loan from Madison County. East Alton hopes to have the new truck by February or March of next year.
