Fred BrightEast Alton Mayor Fred Bright is retiring at the end of the month.  Bright is announcing the decision to step down on May 1 as he deals with health issues and a pending back surgery.  He says whoever the new mayor is will have to deal with some issues of their own.

Bright tells The Big Z the biggest one is the loss of funding from the state under the direction of Governor Bruce Rauner.

He says revitalizing the housing stock in the village is one of his accomplishments of which he is most proud.  Most recently the redevelopment of the old “defense area” into the Emerald Ridge neighborhood stands out as an example, but Bright tells The Big Z there was another project years ago in which the Blair school was torn down and a dozen new homes were built on that block.

Bright says his replacement should be named at the May 5th Village Board Meeting.  Bright has been mayor for 18 years, moving into the office in 1997 after spending a decade as a Village Trustee.  He was the village’s Police Chief from 1972 to 1978.
