An early morning fire in Godfrey damaged a home in the 900 block of Robert Drive but the people inside were able to escape.   Godfrey fire crews were able to quickly contain the fire that broke out and five people inside were able to escape without injury just after 3:30am today.

The residence is a group home, occupied by three people with developmental disabilities and two caretakers who helped bring the occupants to safety.  The fire appeared to have started in a first floor bathroom that was heavily damaged, as was part of the attic.  There was smoke damage throughout the home and it is currently unable to be occupied.  The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced residents.  Thirteen Godfrey firefighters, including some off-duty, and three Fosterburg firefighters responded to the scene to fight the fire that was brought under control within 30 minutes.
