It could be the end of the road for the federal gas tax helping local mass transit districts. U. S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says the House version of a transportation bill would end a 30-year custom.

Durbin says money to maintain and expand mass transit – both in the Chicago area and in Downstate cities – is critical: “We just can’t build highways fast enough!”

Durbin says the Senate version of the bill is a bipartisan solution, but the House may well ignore it, setting up what Durbin called “a ‘High Noon’ situation.”

Durbin was at a Springfield bus garage Friday to announce grants for local mass transit districts in Illinois to purchase clean diesel buses.
