As gun violence on the streets of Chicago continues to garner national attention, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) remains committed passing legislation that he says would save lives. Durbin is supportive of a ban on military style weapons and large capacity magazines. Asked specifically if any federal help is available to help quell the violence on the streets of Chicago, Durbin said they are looking at any opportunity to bring in resources from Washington.

“We have got to see a police presence on the streets,” Durbin said of a plan to pull police from desk duty and put them on the police. Durbin says he also supports a bill co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) that would up the penalties for those involved in a straw purchase of a gun. “You know, people like to mock the City of Chicago ‘oh the toughest gun laws in the world and look at all the crimes that are committed with guns,’ those guns aren’t sold in the City of Chicago, one out of ten of them are sold out of Mississippi coming into this city so we got to slow that traffic of straw purchases and guns” into Chicago, Durbin said.
