The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates 7-million Americans abuse prescription drugs.  Nationally, the spring National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is set for tomorrow.  In the St. Louis Metro area, there are a number of locations participating, including the Donald E. Sandidge Alton Law Enforcement Center.

Among abusers over the age of 12, research shows 70% obtain the drugs from friends and family members.  Alton Police Lieutenant David DeWall says this program provides a way to permanently take the old or unused drugs out of circulation.

DeWall comments

The police station in Alton has a drop box for old medications that is available at any time.  It is estimated more than 4,000 young adults and children have their first experiment with prescription drugs every day.
