The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration estimates 7-million Americans abuse prescription drugs. Locally, an effort involving the Madison County State's Attorney and Coroner, and members of the drug treatment and counseling communities called "Lock Your Meds" continues.  It is a local addition to the recent National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which took in 1,400 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Among abusers over the age of 12, research shows 70% obtain the drugs from friends and family members. Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons says those who begin popping pills often find themselves getting drawn further into addiction.

Gibbons comments

The Donald E. Sandidge Law Enforcement Center in Alton has a drop box for old medications that is available at any time. It is estimated more than 4,000 young adults and children have their first experiment with prescription drugs every day.
