We set our clocks back an hour this weekend, so many of us will be driving home in the dark after work starting next week. Some studies suggest traffic accidents increase in the days following the time change, while others say any increase is due to the natural aspect of having decreased vision at night. Whatever the case may be, Illinois State Police Trooper Doug Francis urges you to be careful behind the wheel.
In addition to the normal hazards, most fatal DUI crashes occur at night, which is why there are more DUI patrols at that time of day. One thing Francis says they can't patrol for and drivers must fend for themselves on is the deer population that seems to swell at this time of year. While not an actual increase in numbers, it may seem that way as they typically dart along and across highways during their mating season.
